Student Preceptorship & Clinical Education

Student Preceptorship & Clinical Education

At Fair Oaks Psychiatry, we take pride in shaping the future of mental health care by offering meaningful preceptorship opportunities for nursing students. As a psychiatric-focused clinic, we are deeply committed to mentoring and supporting the next generation of nurses through hands-on clinical training, real-time feedback, and collaborative learning experiences.
Our preceptorship program is designed to immerse students in the complexities and rewards of psychiatric nursing. Under the supervision of experienced mental health professionals, students gain exposure to a wide range of psych-related services and care strategies. These include:

  • Mental Health Assessment
Students learn to conduct and interpret psychiatric evaluations, observe client behaviors, and document mental health histories with a compassionate, clinical approach.
  • Primary Care
Students are introduced to the foundational aspects of primary health services, including preventive care, chronic disease management, health screenings, and patient education. This ensures a strong base in holistic, patient-centered care.
  •  Family Health
We focus on the health of individuals across the lifespan—from children to older adults. Students participate in care coordination and health promotion strategies that strengthen family and community wellness.
  • Psychiatry
As a psychiatry-focused site, we provide immersive clinical experiences in mental health assessment, medication management, therapeutic interventions, and crisis stabilization. Students observe and assist in psychiatric evaluations, treatment planning, and ongoing patient care, gaining critical insight into behavioral health nursing.
  •  Family and Marriage Therapy
Students may also have the opportunity to observe sessions and understand the dynamics of relationship-centered therapy. We expose them to therapeutic approaches that address interpersonal conflict, communication breakdowns, and emotional healing within families and couples.
  • Crisis Intervention
We train students in evidence-based crisis management strategies, de-escalation techniques, and emergency response within the psychiatric setting.

  • Medication Management
Under guided supervision, students participate in understanding psychopharmacology, monitoring side effects, and educating clients on medication adherence.
  • Individual and Group Therapy Observation
Students may observe or assist with therapeutic sessions, learning how structured interactions support emotional and behavioral healing.
  • Care Coordination & Case Management
Students work alongside our care team to connect clients with community resources, follow-up services, and long-term treatment planning.
  • Behavioral Health Education
Through patient teaching opportunities, students help promote mental wellness, coping strategies, and psycho-education.

We encourage nursing students who are passionate about psychiatric care to reach out to us directly for preceptorship inquiries. Our clinic provides a supportive and educational environment where students are treated as valuable team members and actively involved in patient care activities.
By working alongside experienced psychiatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and therapists, students gain real-world experience that prepares them for excellence in mental health nursing.
